February 14 has been celebrated since the end of the 5th century when Pope Gelasius declared it Saint Valentine’s Day. However, it was generally more religious or romantic.

When did Valentine Day celebrate begin?

It is a fixed day on the calendar that was incorporated into Lupercalia, a mid-February holiday on the ancient Roman calendar that some historians believe led to Valentine’s Day as a celebration of love. In Lupercalia, men and women were paired by selecting names from a jar as part of a ritual celebrating fertility. The marriage of Zeus and Hera was celebrated in Ancient Greece during the midwinter season.

The answer is not very much. Around 500 AD, Saint Valentine’s Day was added to the liturgical calendar of the Catholic religion. A martyred saint named Valentine was commemorated on this Day. It is believed that three different saints are called Valentine or Valentinus. Still, due to the lack of information about these men and conflicting reports regarding the Saint Valentine’s Day celebration, the feast day was removed from the Christian liturgical calendar in 1969.

Although little is known about the actual history of Saint Valentine, upon whom the holiday is based, the legend of Saint Valentine has several versions. Claudius II executed Saint Valentine for refusing to convert to paganism. Before his death, he healed the daughter of his jailer, who then converted to Christianity along with his family. According to another legend, St. Valentine of Terni was the true namesake of the holiday; this saint was also executed.

However, according to others–and this is how Saint Valentine has become associated with love-themed holidays–Saint Valentine was a Roman priest who married soldiers forbidden from marrying due to an emperor’s decree that married soldiers did not make suitable warriors. Thus, young men could not marry. It was Saint Valentine’s ring with Cupid on it that helped soldiers recognize him. Additionally, he distributed paper hearts to Christians as a precursor to greeting cards.

Due to this legend, St. Valentine became known as the patron saint of love. Valentine’s Day prayer asks Saint Valentine to connect lovers so that two become one and the couple remembers their devotion to God.

Even though the Saint Valentine story laid the foundation for establishing Valentine Day celebration as a day of romantic love, a poem written by medieval author Geoffrey Chaucer in 1381 solidified the connection between Saint Valentine and love. This poem is considered the source of the modern-day celebration of Valentine’s Day, commemorating romantic love.

What is the significance of Valentine Day celebration?

Chaucer lived during the Middle Ages, when poetry, songs, and paintings celebrated romantic declarations of love. As early as the 15th century, the word “valentine” was used to describe lovers in poems and songs of the Day, and in the 18th century, an English book entitled The Young Man’s Valentine Writer was published. As early as the mid-19th century, mass-produced paper Valentine’s Cards were being manufactured (though DIY Valentine card ideas are still worth trying), and Valentine’s Day as we know it was born.

It is a fact of Valentine Day celebration history that the romantic holiday is not immune to tragedy. A gang led by Al Capone killed seven men in Prohibition Chicago on February 14, 1929. The Valentine’s Day Massacre became a flashpoint in Prohibition history, as police and lawmakers sought to control then-illegal substances like alcohol by pursuing gangs and mobs.

Why is Valentine’s Day celebrated?

Valentine’s Day has been a religious celebration, an ancient ritual day, and a commercial holiday throughout the years (and centuries). It is because of all that change that Valentine’s Day can be whatever you wish: you can skip the valentine day celebration completely, buy yourself some chocolate or flowers, or express your love and appreciation for the people in your life, whether they are coworkers, romantic partners, friends, or family members.
