There are several non-boring prompts that you can use to charm and delight your interviewer and (hopefully) land that job.

The question “What’s your favorite thing about working here?” is a much more interesting one to ask, as I already have a go-to answer, which is honest and sanitized, but asking it this way puts me in a different mindset and encourages me to give a more honest and off-the-cuff answer.

When I first heard this question, I was working at a company I didn’t enjoy, and I accidentally answered honestly that I would miss the people there, but I wouldn’t miss the unrealistic pace of work and half-baked projects I encountered there. While it was not my finest moment, it was extremely useful information for the candidate.

It is ten times more useful to ask a specific question about how a company is moving towards better DEI (or anything, really) rather than a generic question about whether a company cares about DEI in general. This question is a valuable opportunity for companies to determine whether they are taking action on diversity, equity, and inclusion or if a team is full of social justice-y platitudes. It still takes time for most companies to achieve true diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, this question is a reliable way to determine if a team is taking action on these issues.

A company’s willingness to take feedback and act on it can provide a helpful indication of what its culture will be like. As a team, we are looking for a culture that values feedback, gathers it, and acts accordingly. This will enable us to ensure that your voice and suggestions are considered. The question we are asking is similar to the one we asked about DEI. This is why we are interested in how they collect feedback, not simply whether they do so. It may be done through surveys, town halls, suggestions, or one-on-ones-there are plenty of ways to get relevant answers here, so long as it is not just a generic hand-wave answer that will not have much impact.

Although you may not be in direct contact with the CEO daily, you still have to remember that they will make decisions about the company and change your day-to-day work and your job security. This question gives you a good sense of how involved the CEO is in what’s happening at the company (does your interviewer have a story about how they interacted with them, or is it just vague general statements?) This can also give you a sense of how much the actual employees trust and like the CEO. Some people can only boast that they are geniuses, and you should run away from them.

This is a fun question for me to answer and will give you some actual information about paid time off at this company. Everyone can say “we encourage people to take vacations,” but we want to know if they actually follow through.
