During an interview with a hiring manager, here are some of the crucial interview questions and answers you should ask

There are several non-boring prompts that you can use to charm and delight your interviewer and (hopefully) land that job.

You have already aced the interview so far: For each question, you provided a relevant anecdote, you honestly but tactfully admitted your weaknesses of every interview questions, and you made the interviewer laugh. The sun is setting on your career with this job. However, the interviewer gives you the floor to ask your questions before you depart for the interview. Is there anything you can ask that will make you look smart and knowledgeable besides being interesting and memorable?

The interview questions and answers you ask during an interview might not lead to you getting a job offer on a silver platter. However, they can move the needle and have your interviewer feeling more confident about the possibility of adding you to their team. It will also provide you with information to help you decide if this is something you want to pursue.

All kinds of advice have been given to me about The Perfect Question to ask (“ask about success metrics, so they know you’re driven;” “ask if there is anything they’re concerned about so they will just tell you about everything they like about you, and you will trick them into having a positive association with you”). Still, ultimately we don’t have to waste time on Jedi mind tricks to succeed.

It has come to my attention throughout the recruiting career that I have encountered a handful of questions I got from candidates that I loved and often prompted me to write “asked great questions” in my notes when attending interviews. In my opinion, these are the most meaningful because they are relatively uncommon and provide positive signals about a person’s fit within the organization’s culture.

What’s one thing you would miss if it were your last week at [company], and what would you not miss if it were your last week at [company]?Interview questions and answers

The question “What’s your favorite thing about working here?” is a much more interesting one to ask, as I already have a go-to answer, which is honest and sanitized, but asking it this way puts me in a different mindset and encourages me to give a more honest and off-the-cuff answer.

When I first heard this question, I was working at a company I didn’t enjoy, and I accidentally answered honestly that I would miss the people there, but I wouldn’t miss the unrealistic pace of work and half-baked projects I encountered there. While it was not my finest moment, it was extremely useful information for the candidate.

In terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion, what steps are your company taking? – interview questions and answers

It is ten times more useful to ask a specific question about how a company is moving towards better DEI (or anything, really) rather than a generic question about whether a company cares about DEI in general. This question is a valuable opportunity for companies to determine whether they are taking action on diversity, equity, and inclusion or if a team is full of social justice-y platitudes. It still takes time for most companies to achieve true diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, this question is a reliable way to determine if a team is taking action on these issues.

How does [company] collect feedback, and how does it act upon it? Is there an example you can give me? interview questions and answers

A company’s willingness to take feedback and act on it can provide a helpful indication of what its culture will be like. As a team, we are looking for a culture that values feedback, gathers it, and acts accordingly. This will enable us to ensure that your voice and suggestions are considered. The question we are asking is similar to the one we asked about DEI. This is why we are interested in how they collect feedback, not simply whether they do so. It may be done through surveys, town halls, suggestions, or one-on-ones-there are plenty of ways to get relevant answers here, so long as it is not just a generic hand-wave answer that will not have much impact.
